Weekend

3 Days in Trier: the UNESCO Itinerary

Three days is enough to cover Trier's UNESCO must-sees without rushing, with an evening in Olewig (a wine village within Trier).

Step 1

Day 1: Antiquity

Porta Nigra (the Black Gate, 1 hour including the climb). Walk down Simeonstrasse to the Hauptmarkt (the main market square): the market cross, Petrusbrunnen fountain, and Steipe. Lunch at Weinstube Kesselstatt on Liebfrauenplatz. Afternoon at the Dom (cathedral) and Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), 1.5 hours including the cathedral treasury. In the evening, stroll along the Moselle promenade, then dinner at Pfeffermuehle.

Step 2

Day 2: The Imperial Era

Kaiserthermen (the Imperial Baths), then walk to the Amphitheater (1 hour each). Lunch at Zum Domstein with its Roman-themed menu. Afternoon at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum (2 hours, the best museum of antiquities in Europe). In the evening, the Konstantinbasilika (Basilica of Constantine), then dinner at Schlemmereule.

Step 3

Day 3: Olewig and the Moselle

Bus 6 to Olewig. The Weinkulturpfad wine trail (5 km, 2 hours) through the steep-slope vineyards. Lunch at the Reverchon winery or at Becker's. In the afternoon, head back to the Roemerbruecke (the Roman Bridge), then up to the Mariensaeule (Marian Column) on bus 8 for the postcard view over the city. Farewell dinner at Becker's.
